The Ascension of the Lord: Luke 24:46–53

7th Sunday of Easter: John 17:20–26

Then Jesus led them out as far as Bethany, raised his hands, and blessed them. – Luke 24:50

Ascension is an important idea in the story of our faith. In the Gospel record, Jesus looks up when he prays, raises his hands in blessing, and speaks of Heaven frequently or is spoken to by a voice above the clouds. He comes up from Death in a miraculous Resurrection. Eventually, Jesus departs this earth by a final, spectacular Ascension. Up, up, and up.

The action of the Gospel is one long ascension from obscurity to renown, humiliation to glory, death to life. At the beginning of the story of Israel, Jacob once dreamed of a ladder strung between Earth and Heaven. On it, he imagined multitudes of divine messengers carrying out the will of God here, there, and everywhere.

Throughout history, countless believers have launched innumerable prayers into the presence of God. Who can say that the prayers you pray today may lift up a fragment of the world in need of hope?

List the people or concerns you most frequently lift up in prayer.
What else should the community of faith pray for?

LET US PRAY… Lord, through Scripture’s revelation, we know you as Creator, Rescuer, and Sanctifier. Come boldly into our times once more and heal the divisions of wealth and power that wound the heart of the world. Bring your justice and peace to all who cry for help. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

While The Gospel at Home takes a break in the summer months, we’ll be drawing our weekly reflections from Exploring the Sunday Readings.
