Teaching GuideOVERVIEWIn the Gospel for these two Sundays, we hear the story of Jesus’ Resurrection to new life and his appearances to Mary Magdalene, to his other disciples, and finally to Thomas. Promise provides story strips so the children can learn and tell these stories to each other and to their families. Like Mary Magdalene, they will be bearers of the Good News of Jesus’ Resurrection. If you meet with your children both weeks, save the second story strip for the second week. Use the suggested extending activities if you need them.MATERIALS: Scissors, crayons or pencils, large envelopes for the children to take their activities home, Promise music CD, CD player.NOTE: Make the cuts in the picture screen on page 4 before distributing Promise to the children. Use an Exacto knife or razor blade, or fold the picture screen at the top of page 3 in two, lengthwise, and cut on the dotted lines.SHARING LIFE STORIESOBJECTIVE: The children will remember times of celebration and how good we feel when we help others.1. GATHER AND SING Gather the children in a story circle. Ask what they do when they are at a game and their team makes a basket or a home run. Have them tell you what they shout: Hooray, Yippee, Way to go! Explain that this is a wayof celebrating their team’s victory. Distribute Promise to the children. Have them find the word Alleluia on the cover. They will recognize it from last week’s lesson. Explain Alleluia is a happy, joyful word that means praise God. They will hear this word at Mass on Easter Sunday and the following Sundays.If you have the Promise music CD, use the Alleluia round with the children. They can sing along with the children on the CD. Have the children process around the room to the music as they did with their windsocks last week.2. STORY: The Easter Egg Hunt Ask if any of the children have been on an Easter egg hunt. Where was it? What was fun? What was difficult? Today’s story is about a boy who is a champion egg hunter—Desmond woke up early on Easter Sunday morning. He was excited. Today was the Easter egg hunt at church. Last year Desmond had found more eggs than anybody else. This year Desmond’s little sister, Isabelle, was going to the Easter egg hunt, too.When Desmond’s family got to church, Ms. Heidi, the religious education coordinator, was standing near the pine trees. A group of children were already gathered around her. Desmond and Isabelle ran over to join the group. “Please listen,” Ms. Heidi said to the children. “Here are the Easter egg hunt rules. Each child gets a basket. When I say‘Alleluia,’ you can start looking for eggs. When I ring the bell, everyone comes back here.”Desmond whispered to Isabelle, “You should look in the bushes by the side door. There are always lots of eggs there.” Ms. Heidi said, “ALLELUIA,” very loudly, and the hunt began. Desmond found three eggs right away. Then he looked around for Isabelle. She was still standing by the pine trees, holding an empty basket. “Start looking,” Desmond called to her, but she just shook her head. Desmond ran over to Isabelle. “Do you want me to help you?” he asked. “Yes,” Isabelle said.Desmond and Isabelle found an egg in the rainspout and one behind the church sign and one by the Blessed Virgin Mary statue. They found eggs in the bushes and where the tulips were beginning to bloom. When Ms. Heidi rang the bell, Isabelle’s basket was full.When Ms. Heidi counted the eggs, Isabelle had the most. She got a big pink rabbit for her prize. Ms. Heidi said, “Desmond, you have only three eggs in your basket. What happened?” Desmond said, “I already have a pink rabbit from last year. It was fun to help Isabelle win.”Ask: What was Desmond excited about when he woke up? How did Desmond help his sister? Does helping make him as happy as winning?3. STRETCH AND SING Gather in the open area. Tellthe children they are going to hunt for pretend Easter eggs. To find them, they will have to listen very carefully to the instructions. Begin with the following song to the tune of “Here We Go ‘Round the Mulberry Bush.” Ask the children to skip in a circle around the open area, swinging their pretend empty baskets and sing—Here we go on an Easter egg hunt,an Easter egg hunt, an Easter egg hunt. Here we go on an Easter egg hunton Easter Sunday morning.There are Easter eggs in the maple trees. Stretch! Stretch! Stretch! Put the egg in your basket and skip around the circle again. Don’t swing your basket as much this time, or your egg might fall out.There are Easter eggs under the deck. Get on your hands and knees to find them. It is dark under there so you haveto feel with your hands. Feel the ground to the right. Now to the left. Now straight ahead. There is an egg! Put it in your basket and crawl out backwards. When everyone has crawled out, make a circle and skip to the song.There are eggs in the fishpond! Gather in a circle around the fishpond. Everyone has to lean way over and reach out. Then drop your hand into the water and see if you can pick up an egg. When you get one, hold it over your head so everyone can see and then put it in your basket.How many eggs in each basket? That’s enough for now.
