For Catechists and TeachersJesus Is the Heart of CatechesisWelcome to Promise, the K–1 edition of the Pflaum Gospel Weeklies. Welcome also to a liturgy-based approach to catechesis. Each Promise lesson is built around the theme of the Sunday Gospel, so Jesus’ story forms the heart of each lesson. In Joy of the Gospel (Evangelii Gaudium), Pope Francis urges catechists to make Jesus’ Good News “ring out over and over. Jesus Christ loves you; he gave his life to save you; and now he is living at your side every day to enlighten, strengthen, and free you” (164).As a catechist, you hand on to children a living tradition that includes Scripture, doctrine, creeds, lives of saints, and the teaching of councils and popes. But, as Pope Francis continues, “nothing is more solid, profound, secure, meaningful, and wisdom-filled than the initial proclamation”—Jesus Christ loves you (165).Liturgy-Based CatechesisThe children will meet Jesus over and over again in his work of healing, teaching, and telling everyone he meets about God’s love for them. They will recognize their place in the worshiping community and understand how they can follow Jesus’ way.To tell the Good News of Jesus Christ is the Catholic Church’s mission. As teachers and catechists, we hand on this Good News, the Gospel, to the next generation. Every Christian makes Jesus’ teaching known and visible by how he or she lives the Gospel. Baptism calls each of us to put on and embody Christ. Together we form the Body of Christ in the world. Each week, Promise invites young children to meet Jesus in the Sunday Gospels and the Sunday assembly. Each weekly lesson prepares the children to hear the Gospel message and helps the children understand how the Gospel relates to their own lives. Our new teaching guides more systematically link the Scripture and Catholic doctrine contained in each lesson. It will now be clearer to you when in the lesson to bring out theWhat the Church Believes and Teaches handbooks. The handbook pages underscore and expand the doctrinal content of the Promise lessons, helping the children to appreciate the importance and beauty of Catholicism.Date/SundaySunday GospelsSacraments & LiturgyCreedSeptember 24, 201725th Sunday in Ordinary TimeMatthew 20:1–16a God Is GenerousGod abounds in love (#214, 221)Gathering as a community of believersOctober 1, 201726th Sunday in Ordinary TimeMatthew 21:28–32 God’s WillGod makes us free to choose (#1799–1800)Celebrating as a communityOctober 8, 201727th Sunday in Ordinary TimeMatthew 21:33–43 God’s VineyardGod cares for Creation (#287, 315)We hear Bible stories at MassOctober 15, 201728th Sunday in Ordinary TimeMatthew 22:1–14 Wedding FeastJesus invites us to his table (#1396)Eucharist; BaptismOctober 22, 201729th Sunday in Ordinary TimeMatthew 22:15–21 Caesar and GodBaptism welcomes us to God’s family (#265, 985)Sacrament of BaptismOctober 29, 201730th Sunday in Ordinary TimeMatthew 22:34–40 Great CommandmentJesus’ Great Commandment (#1970–72)Jesus teaches us to loveNovember 5, 201731st Sunday in Ordinary TimeMatthew 23:1–12The Servant Is GreatestWe serve like Jesus (#561, 1822–23)Saints; sacramentals: images of saintsNovember 12, 201732nd Sunday in Ordinary TimeMatthew 25:1–13 Foolish ChoicesGod lets us choose (#1732–34)Church is a communityImprimatur: =Most Reverend Robert J.
