October 22, 2017 • 29th Sunday in Ordinary TimeSunday Readings: Isaiah 45:1, 4–6;1 Thessalonians 1:1–5b; Matthew 22:15–21For Catechists and TeachersScripture BackgroundThe Pharisees in Sunday’s Gospel want to trap Jesus into taking sides on the questionof paying Roman taxes. They believe that accepting Roman rule in their country means they are not loyal to God and God’s rules. Jesus’ answer, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s,” calls them and us to obey both civil and religious laws and to examine our allegiances when the two conflict. The young children will learn that Jesus is a fair authority figure, one who will not be baited into a rigid position.Connecting Scripture and Doctrine“Catholics are to embrace their citizenship not merely as a duty and privilege, but as an opportunity to participate [more fully] in building the culture of life.... Responsible citizenship is an [important private and public] virtue; participation in the political process is a moral obligation” (NDC, 10B).“Since the earliest times, Baptism has been administered to children, for it is a grace and a gift of God that does not presuppose any human merit; children are baptized in the faith of the Church” (CCC, 1282).Promise focuses on belonging, building on experiences of belonging to a family, Church, team, and country. The Church welcomes children at Baptism, may bless them at Eucharist where they learn Mass prayers and gestures. Feeling welcomed and accepted helps the children know they belong to the Christian community.Materialsl Promise Student Lesson for 10/22l Catechism handbook, page 13l CD player and Promise/Good News CD-2l scissorsl crayons or colored pencilsl dollar billNOTE: Separate pages 1–2 from pages 3–4 of student lessons.
