October 22, 2017 • 29th Sunday in Ordinary Timegroup. Ask: What did Carlos see and hear at the baptism? Signing of the baby, promises from parents, water and the priest’s words, white garment, lighted candle. Give the children time to tell about baptisms they have witnessed and what they saw. Conclude by saying that Maria’s parents wanted her to be part of the Church and to follow Jesus. Baptism gets her started.Activity l Our Family Prays Together Booklet (pages 3–4) Complete your own copy of the family prayer book before your Promise session. The activity requires only one simple cut across the page on the dark horizontal line on page 2. The dotted lines are for folding. Show the children how to fold one of the pieces so the title shows, fold the second piece so the Morning Prayer shows, and then slip one folded piece inside the other to make the booklet. Page through the booklet with the children, making sure their page numbers are in order. Point out the prayers they say only at home: the morning prayer, bedtime prayer, and meal prayer. The other prayers are often said together with other people at Mass or in school.Let the children choose which prayer they want to pray today. Send the booklets home with a note to the parents so they realize they should reinforce the learning of these prayers and pray them with their children. Keep your own booklet to bring out at the next few Promise lessons as a reminder to the children.Closing Prayer Invite the children to stand and repeat this prayer after you: I belong to God. / I belong to God’s family. / I was baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. / Thank you, God.Play and sing “Come and Follow Me” (CD-2, #14) to close your prayer and your class session.Remind the children to share their Gospel Weeklies with their families and to do the Family Corner activities and prayer together. What the Church WHAT THE CHURCH BELIEVES AND TEACHES HANDBOOK Believes andTeachesBaptism Is a Sacrament (page 13)Read the sentences on page 13 aloud together. There are several new vocabulary words on this page: Baptism, Sacrament, grace. Invite the children to repeat the words aloud. Talk about what each word means so they can explain them in their own words. For definitions, see “Words for You to Know,” pages 31–32.Ask: What are the promises of Baptism? God says, “You are my child.” The person who is baptized promises to live as a child of God. Ask: What happens when a baby or very small child is baptized? How do babies and young children make this promise when they can’t even talk? Explain that parents and godparents make the promise for the baby or child. They also promise to teach the child about God so that someday the child can make the promises on his or her own. Ask: How many of you were baptized when you were a baby? Tell them that now they are old enough to make this promise themselves. Their parents and godparents will still help them keep their promises.Take the children to see the baptismal font or pool in your parish church. Use a doll to demonstrate the action and words of Baptism. Limit your demonstration to the pouring of water and the words.Be sure the children know how to do a crossword puzzle. Divide the children into groups of three or four to solve the puzzle. (Answers: Down—1-holy, 4-love; Across—2-God, 3-family)Have the children close the What the Church Believes and Teaches handbooks and return to Promise, page 2.Live the GospelObjective The children will understand that they belong to God’s family through Baptism.Story: Carlos tells about a baptism.
