November 12, 2017 • 32nd Sunday in Ordinary TimeActivity • Creative Drama Retell the Gospel story by having all the children take the part of the 10 girls who were invited to the wedding. They all fall asleep; then all wake up. Ask: How did the girls with extra oil for their lamps feel when they woke up? How did the other girls feel? Invite all the children be girls with oil in their lamps and join you in a circle dance. Move five steps to the right, stop and clap. Move five steps to the left. Stop and clap again.Play and sing “CHOICES” (CD-1, #16) to summarize the Gospel message.Distribute the children’s What the Church Believes and Teaches handbooks.Live the GospelObjective The children will explore wise and foolish choices in a folktale.Story l The Little Red Hen Find a version of the story of the Little Red Hen in your library or choose one to share from YouTube. (Adjust story characters to match those shown on pages 3–4: farmer, goat, and cat.) Share the story with the children. They will enjoy the repetition and will tell you what they think of friends who don’t help each other or forgive each other. After the story, ask: What happened in the story? Many will side with the hen for not feeding those who wouldn’t help her. Others may think her friends had good reasons for not helping, and the hen should forgive them. Let the children express their opinions. As a summary, invite the children to imagine how the hen felt eating her bread all by herself when her friends outside were hungry. Ask: Did that feel good to the hen? What would make her feel better? Summarize by saying that friends usually help friends when they can, and friends forgive friends and make up with them.Activity l Creative Drama Invite one child to be the little red hen and other children to be her friends. Then let the children act out the story or retell it briefly as they pantomime.Activity l Story Puppets (pages 3–4) Cut out the puppet shapes on pages 3–4. If your time is short, you may have them ready for the children to use. Tape or staple the pieces together, leaving a hole at the bottom for a pencil or craft-stick handle. Divide the children into groups of four to tell the story. Encourage the children to use the puppets to tell the story to their families.Closing Prayer Gather in a prayer circle. Ask the children if there is anything or anyone they wish to pray for. After each child tells a concern, lead the children in responding: “Lord, hear our prayer.” Make the Sign of the Cross together.End your prayer and gathering by playing and singing “CHOICES” (CD-1, #16).WHAT THE CHURCH BELIEVES AND TEACHES HANDBOOKWhat the Church Believes and TeachesBlessed Trinity (page 31) The Sign of the Cross (page 29)A sense of belonging is very important to the children. They gain security and confidence from belonging to a loving family. Part of the security of belonging comes from understanding and feeling comfortable with what family members say and do. The children gain the same kind of security and confidence from belonging to their church family. Part of that security comes from understanding and feeling comfortable with words they hear and actions they see in church.Familiarize the children with the term Blessed Trinity. Make a game of it. Ask: What is the word for this picture? Who knows what this word means? Where did you hear it before? Is this a word you hear in church? The children were introduced to the Sign of theCross in the lesson for the 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time (10/1/2017) and again in the lesson for the 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time (10/22/17) in the activities about Baptism. Now is a good time to review and help them make these connections to the term Blessed Trinity and our belief in this important mystery of our faith.Have the children close the What the Church Believes and Teaches handbooks and return to Promise, page 3.Lesson Wrap-UpVisit gospelweeklies.com/Catechists-Teachers to download Promise Weekly Review template.Use Activity #6 from the Promise Activity Book as a take-home activity or lesson wrap-up.Unit 1: We Are the Church l TG1-35The NEW Gospel WeekliesPFLAUM GOSPEL WEEKLIES Faith Formation Program
