September 24, 2017 • 25th Sunday in Ordinary TimeThe man went out again about nine o’clock because he needed more help. He hired more workers. He went out at noon and at three o’clock and kept sending more people to the vineyard to work. At five o’clock, he went to the marketplace one last time. There were still people there who needed jobs. The vineyard owner sent them to the vineyard too.When it was time to quit, the vineyard owner asked his manager to pay all the workers a day’s wage. The manager called the ones who had come in the late afternoon and paid them a full day’s wage. When the ones who had worked all day saw that, they thought they would get more pay. But when it was their turn to be paid, they got the same amount as everyone else. They complained to the owner. “Why didn’t we get paid more than the ones who started work at five o’clock?” The owner said, “I gave you the amount I promised you. I want to be generous to everyone.”Invite the children to turn to page 3 of Promise and retell the story to you, using the illustrations. Help them notice details— the height of the sun at each time, the clothes the workers are wearing, the vineyard and grapevines.Ask: What do you think of the vineyard owner’s decision to pay everyone the same? Conclude by saying Jesus told this story to tell us how much God loves everyone. God is not stingy. God is generous. God’s love is for everyone.Activity l Stretch and Sing Invite the children to pick up their copies of Promise and lead them to the work area while playing and singing “God’s Love Is...” (CD-2, #6).Distribute the children’s What the Church Believes and Teaches handbooks.Live the GospelObjective The children will realize that Jesus is with them in their Promise class.Activity l I am a Promise child. (page 2) Open Promise to page 2 and read the title aloud. Read the rebus together, making sure each child understands how it works. Help the children print their names on the top line. Count off to create pairs of children. Ask them to read the page aloud together.Closing Prayer l We pray and sing. (page 4) Invite the children to bring their Promise lessons to the prayer circle. Read the words on page 4 together. Then read the words again and add gestures. The children point to themselves and toeach other on the fourth line. Sing this to the tune of “Are You Sleeping?”Remind the children to share their Gospel Weeklies with their families and to do the Family Corner activities and prayer together.Discuss making and keeping promises. Let the children share stories about making or receiving promises. Ask: What kind of promises have you made? To whom did you makea promise? Who made a promise to you? What did they promise? How does it feel to keep a promise to someone? How does it feel when someone keeps a promise to you?Ask: Can you find a promise from God? “I will send Jesus, my Son, to help you.” Ask: Can you find a promise from Jesus? “I call you friends.” Underline the promises.Emphasize that God always keeps his promises to us. Jesus is always true to his word. We can trust God and Jesus.Have the children close the What the Church Believes and Teaches handbooks and return to Promise, page 2.WHAT THE CHURCH BELIEVES AND TEACHES HANDBOOKWhat the Church Believes and TeachesA Promise Is Special (page 4)Invite the children to write their names on the inside front cover. You may have already filled in the othertwo lines. Tell the children they will learn things about Jesus from this book too. Point out that the name of this handbook and of their weekly lessons is Promise. Help them find page 4 in their handbooks. Read it to them. Ask: What is a promise?
