October 8, 2017 • 27th Sunday in Ordinary TimeSunday Readings: Isaiah 5:1–7; Philippians 4:6–9; Matthew 21:33–43For Catechists and TeachersScripture BackgroundIn this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus tells about a man who had a vineyard. The man cared lovingly for his vineyard and looked forward to a rich harvest of delicious fruit. We are God’s vineyard, the object of God’s care and the fruit of God’s grace.Seeds puts the Gospel within young children’s reach by concentrating its lesson on growing things, the care they take, and the care children can give. The children will develop an image of Jesus as one who wants them to prosper and grow. They will know that God takes care of them like the landowner took care of his vines.Connecting Scripture and Doctrine“Especially in his parables, Christ invited his listeners to a whole new manner of life sustained by faith in God, encouraged by hope in the kingdom, and animated by love for God and neighbor” (NDC, 28.2). See also CCC, 356–58.Sharing the Lesson with FamiliesSuggest that parents post the “I am growing” child on their refrigerator. Tell them to make the figure look more like their child by adding glasses or specific clothing. Encourage them to build on this week’s theme of growing by watching family videos and looking at photo albums to see how their child has grown.Single-Session Lesson Pacing GuidesNote: These pacing guides are suggestions for how to present the lesson.
