For Catechists and TeachersJesus Is the Heart of CatechesisWelcome to Seeds, the preschool edition of the Pflaum Gospel Weeklies. Welcome also to a liturgy-based approach to catechesis. Each Seeds lesson is built around the theme of the Sunday Gospel, so Jesus’ story forms the heart of each lesson. In Joy of the Gospel (Evangelii Gaudium), Pope Francis urges us to teach the children that God loves them: “On the lips of the catechist the first proclamation must ring out over and over: ‘Jesus Christ loves you; he gave his life to save you; and now he is living at your side every day to enlighten, strengthen and free you’” (164).As a catechist, you hand on to children a living tradition that includes Scripture, doctrine, creeds, lives of saints, and teaching of councils and popes. But, Pope Francis continues, “nothing is more solid, profound, secure, meaningful, and wisdom-filled than that initial proclamation”—Jesus Christ loves you (165).Liturgy-Based CatechesisThe children will meet Jesus over and over again in his work of healing, teaching, and telling everyone he meets about God’s love for them. They will recognize their place in the worshiping community and understand how, even as young children, they can follow Jesus’ way. Each week, Seeds engages preschool children in a process that moves from story to Gospel to actions that build Christian community. Each Seeds lesson begins with singingand prayer, goes on to stories based on children’sreal experiences, tells the Sunday Gospel storyin a way children can understand and enjoy, andconcludes with activities that invite the childrento live the Gospel in their lives.Jesus’ story forms the heart of every Seeds lesson. Every week, the children hear Jesus speaking and see him acting in the Gospel. The stories and activities in Seeds draw on the children’s own experiences both to prepare them to hear Jesus’ simple message and to give them practice in putting his teaching to work in their own families and circles of friends.Seeds lessons connect the Sunday Gospel directly to Church doctrine in the Catechism.Date/SundaySunday GospelsCreedSacraments & LiturgySeptember 24, 201725th Sunday in Ordinary TimeMatthew 20:1–16a God Is GenerousGod abounds in love (#214, 221)Gathering as a community of believers; BaptismOctober 1, 201726th Sunday in Ordinary TimeMatthew 21:28–32 God’s WillJesus teaches us with stories (#561)Celebrating as a community at Mass; EucharistOctober 8, 201727th Sunday in Ordinary TimeMatthew 21:33–43 God’s VineyardGod wants us to grow (#162)The Bible tells us about GodOctober 15, 201728th Sunday in Ordinary TimeMatthew 22:1–14 Wedding FeastJesus invites us to his table (#804–05)Sunday Eucharist is a celebration; MatrimonyOctober 22, 201729th Sunday in Ordinary TimeMatthew 22:15–21 Caesar and GodJesus is our Lord and Master (#450, 2242)Our pastor leads our church familyOctober 29, 201730th Sunday in Ordinary TimeMatthew 22:34–40 Great CommandmentJesus’ rule is love (#1970–72)Praying as a familyNovember 5, 201731st Sunday in Ordinary TimeMatthew 23:1–12The Servant Is GreatestJesus shows us how to serve (#561)Saints and angels; sacramentals: images of saintsNovember 12, 201732nd Sunday in Ordinary TimeMatthew 25:1–13 Foolish ChoicesGod is always with us (#319)Participating at MassTG1-2SEEDS Teaching Guide (supplement to Pflaum Gospel Weeklies) copyright © 2017 by Pflaum Publishing Group, a division of Bayard, Inc., sponsored by the Augustinians of the Assumption.
