October 22, 2017 • 29th Sunday in Ordinary TimeSunday Readings: Isaiah 45:1, 4–6;1 Thessalonians 1:1–5b; Matthew 22:15–21For Catechists and TeachersScripture BackgroundIn Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus teaches that his followers can love and praise God while being active members of the human communities in which they live. The children make a prayer book of praise to remind them of God’s love for them as shown in Creation, in their families, and in their communities.Connecting Scripture and Doctrine“The Church teaches that Catholics are to ‘embrace their citizenship not merely as a duty and privilege, but as an opportunity to participate [more fully] in building the culture of life.’ ‘In the Catholic tradition, responsible citizenship is an [important private and public] virtue; participation in the political process is a moral obligation’” (NDC, 10B). See also CCC, 2639.Seeds focuses on Jesus’ command to give to God what is God’s and provides experiences of praising God. As adults in a child’s life, we must encourage their appreciation of all of God’s gifts. We can give frequent reminders to them of the wonders God has created. Children need role models who show respect and thoughtfulness and who readily offer praise to God.Single-Session Lesson Pacing GuidesNote: These pacing guides are suggestions for how to present the lesson.
