October 1, 2017 • 26th Sunday in Ordinary TimeSunday Readings: Ezekiel 18:25–28; Philippians 2:1–11; Matthew 21:28–32For Catechists and TeachersScripture BackgroundThis Sunday, Jesus tells the story of two sons—one who tells his father he will help but doesn’t and one who refuses to help but later regrets his refusal and decides to help after all. Perhaps in the end both sons helped their father. The vineyard in Sunday’s Gospel symbolizes the people of Israel. Jesus tells the chief priests and elders a parable about a father who asks his two sons to work in his vineyard. Symbolically, this means to care for God’s people. The parable challenges the chief priests and elders to follow through like the first son and care for the people, especially those poor and sick. Jesus wants them to believe in him and his message as many tax collectors and prostitutes do.Connecting Scripture and Doctrine“The liturgy is the summit toward which the activity of the Church is directed; it is also the fount from which all her power flows.... [T]he Liturgy is the privileged place for catechizing the People of God” (NDC, 33). See also CCC, 1069, 1074, 1190, 1193.Sunday’s Gospel story of the two sons shows us both the importance of keeping our word and of changing choices we regret. Seeds encourages children to follow the example of the first son who is willing to re-evaluate his choice, to change, and then to live out his new decision. The children will explore the choices they make and rejoice in the capacity God has given them to be loving, choosing, followers of Jesus.Single-Session Lesson Pacing GuidesNote: These pacing guides are suggestions for how to present the lesson.
