December 3, 2017 • 1st Sunday of AdventSunday Readings: Isaiah 63:16b–17, 19b, 64:2–7; 1 Corinthians 1:3–9; Mark 13:33–37For Catechists and TeachersScripture BackgroundOn this Sunday, the Catholic Church begins the season of preparing for the feast of Christmas, the celebration of God’s becoming human. Advent is also the season that exhorts us to prepare for Jesus’ coming in glory at the end of time. Anticipating this Final Coming is the theme of Sunday’s Gospel.Connecting Scripture and DoctrineThe Promise activities familiarize the children with the people who waited for Jesus’ coming more than 2,000 years ago—his parents, his cousin John, the shepherds, the Magi. Children’s experience of waiting for Christmas is the spirit of the season of Advent. Advent recalls Israel’s long wait for the Messiah, God’s promised one.“Because of God’s presence in time in the person of Jesus Christ, time is sacred. Christians mark time itself in relation to Christ.... The economy or history of salvation unfolds throughout the liturgical year. Each day of the liturgical year is sanctified primarily by Christ’s presence in it, but also by the prayer and the liturgical celebrations of the People of God” (NDC, 37A). See also CCC, 1095.Sharing the Lesson with FamiliesEncourage parents to talk with their child about the Advent calendar and complete a square each day. Suggest they tell the stories of the saints on their feast days and make an Advent wreath for their home. When they light a new candle each Sunday, they may use the family Advent prayer on the booklet.Single-Session Lesson Pacing GuidesNote: These pacing guides are suggestions for how to present the lesson.
