What would you like to be doing when Jesus comes?Distribute the children’s What the Church Believes and Teaches handbooks.Live the GospelObjective The children will learn creative ways to get ready for Jesus’ birthday.Activity ● Advent Booklet (pages 3–4, top) Gather the children in the work area. Distribute pages 3–4 of Promise and scissors. Show the children how to make the one horizontal cuton the heavy black line. Set the Christmas wreath activity aside. Show the children how to fold the page they have to make a booklet. Read the Family Advent Prayer together.Open the booklet and ask the children to describe those two pages to you. Some of the little pictures are the same as the ones on the Advent calendar. Read the heading aloud together. Let the children work alone or in pairs to find the hidden words.Activity ● Our Class Advent Wreath (pages 3–4, bottom) You will need scissors for this activity. You may wish to precut the activity so that only the folding is left for the children to do. When the pinwheels are ready, help the children writetheir names. Tape or staple the pinwheels on heavy paper so you can carry the wreath to different places during Advent. Add four candles made from rolled paper (three violet, one rose). “Light” a new candle each week of Advent.Closing Prayer Have the children bring their Advent booklets to the prayer circle. Say the prayer together. Distribute the envelopes with the Advent calendars and have the children tuck their booklets inside.End your gathering and prayer by singing “The Promise, Part 2” (CD-1, #2).Remind the children to share their Gospel Weeklies with their families and to do the Family Corner activities and prayer together.WHAT THE CHURCH BELIEVES AND TEACHES HANDBOOKWhat the Church Believes and TeachesHoly Seasons:Advent and Christmas (page 18)Ask: What are some special celebrations you remember and look forward to every year? Point out that some of these are holidays, but first of all they are holy days. Their celebrations should include going to church.Remind the children of the Advent calendar on page 2 of Promise. Then show them a liturgical calendar. It is full of holy days and holy seasons. Help them find the Sundays of Advent and the days of Christmas.Direct their attention to page 18. Take time to talk about the pictures for the matching activity for the words Advent and Christmas. Be sure the children understand:● We light one candle of the Advent wreath each Sundayof Advent until, on the fourth Sunday, we light all four candles. As the light from the Advent wreath grows, we are getting closer to Christmas. The wreath is round and green, to represent eternal life and God’s neverending love.● A Nativity scene (also crèche, crib, manger scene), shows the birth of Jesus as described in the Bible.Have the children close the What the Church Believes and Teaches handbooks and return to Promise, pages 3–4.Lesson Wrap-UpVisit gospelweeklies.com/Catechists-Teachers to download Promise Weekly Review template..Use Activity #31 from the Promise Activity Book as a take-home activity or lesson wrap-up.Unit 2: We Celebrate Jesus’ Coming ● TG2-15The NEW Gospel WeekliesPFLAUM GOSPEL WEEKLIES Faith Formation Program
