December 17, 2017 • 3rd Sunday of AdventWHAT THE CHURCH BELIEVES AND TEACHES HANDBOOKWhat the Church Believes and TeachesJesus Wants Us to Do the Right Thing (page 22)Ask: What are some of the times when Jesus obeyed his Father?● He came to earth as a human child.● He preached the Kingdom of God and brought it within ourreach.● He showed us the love of the Father.● He died on the Cross to save all of us.● He returned to his Father in Heaven.Help the children understand that we can choose to obey God every day. We can choose to do what is right and good. This is an important way we can get ready for Jesus.Give an explanation of sin. A sin is freely choosing todo what we know is wrong. It is going against what God wants and disobeying God. Tell children that they can’t judge whether an action is sinful by looking at how big a mess they made or how angry someone is with them. What makes an action a sin is choosing to do what they know is wrong.Read Matthew 25:34–40 from a children’s Bible. Give the children time to draw a picture of themselves taking careof someone who needs help. Be sure to give the children an opportunity to share their pictures. Connect their actions to the Gospel passage as they share. Help the children identify acts of kindness they can do at home for family members.Involve the children in a small service project. Choosea project they can accomplish on their own. It could be decorating paper grocery bags for the parish food pantry, making cards for people in the parish who are sick, picking up litter on the parish grounds, or collecting good used books for children at a women’s or family shelter.Have the children close the What the Church Believes and Teaches handbooks and return to Promise, pages 3–4.Live the GospelObjective The children will make Christmas ornaments for a mobile.Activity ● A Getting-Ready Mobile (pages 3–4) Direct the children to turn to page 4. Identify the shapes as Christmas ornaments. Explain that each ornament shows something or someone ready and waiting for Jesus to come. Turn to page 3 and read the sentences on the ornaments together. Pass our crayons or colored pencils. Give the children time to color the ornaments.Have an aide or older children help cut out the ornaments and put them in a pile. Explain that you will come around with yarn that they can tape to the ornaments. Distribute yarn and small pieces of tape so that the children can do their own taping. If time allows, tie the yarn to hangers or dowel rods to make mobiles.Or have the children take the ornaments home to hang on their Christmas trees.Activity ● Advent Calendar Call the children’s attention to the Advent calendar from Promise from two weeks ago. Ask: How have you practiced the getting-ready activities at home or school? Note behaviors you saw in class today that are on the calendar. Color the three candles on your classroom copy. Tell the children to color the three candles on their copies at home.Closing Prayer “Dear Jesus, we are glad you came to be like us. We like celebrating your birthday at Christmas time. We will share your love with other people.” The children respond, “Amen.”Bring your prayer and session to a close by playing and singing “The Promise, Part 2” (CD-1, #2).Remind the children to share their Gospel Weeklies with their families and to do the Family Corner activities and prayer together.Lesson Wrap-UpVisit gospelweeklies.com/Catechists-Teachers to download Promise Weekly Review template.Use Activity #18 from the Promise Activity Book as a take-home activity or lesson wrap-up.Unit 2: We Celebrate Jesus’ Coming ● TG2-23The NEW Gospel WeekliesPFLAUM GOSPEL WEEKLIES Faith Formation Program
