November 26, 2017 • Feast of Christ the KingSunday Readings: Ezekiel 34:11–12, 15–17;1 Corinthians 15:20–26, 28; Matthew 25:31–46For Catechists and TeachersScripture BackgroundSunday’s Gospel compares the Last Judgment to a shepherd separating sheep from goats. In the story, the shepherd distinguishes the sheep not by the curl in their woolly coats but by their merciful actions. The sheep are people who have fed the hungry, given drink to the thirsty, sheltered the stranger, clothed the naked, and visited the sick and imprisoned. Jesus offers us a clear message for how we should treat other people.Connecting Scripture and DoctrineChildren learn about loving from the adults who mentor them. They learn what it means to care about others and to seek solutions to people’s problems when they see the adults in their lives responding to situations in a caring manner. Promise helps children identify ways they do what Jesus’ words ask. The stories and activities encourage them to respond with empathy, a stage of moral development they may not yet have reached but can practice.“Respect for the inherent dignity of every human person is the foundation of a just society, and its ultimate end is the development of those persons to their fullest potential” (NDC, 43A). See also CCC, 2447.Sharing the Lesson with FamiliesChildren learn to do loving actions by imitating others. Encourage parents to ask their child to lead them through this week’s Promise. Suggest they identify with their child ways members of their family perform the Works of Mercy. Encourage them to begin discussing a way to prepare for Christmas by doing a Work of Mercy during Advent.Single-Session Lesson Pacing GuidesNote: These pacing guides are suggestions for how to present the lesson.
