We get ready at Church. (pages 3–4) Enjoy talking to the children about these colorful picture pages. Start with the family at home (page 3). Ask: How is this family getting ready for Christmas? How do you get ready for Christmas in your home? Finish looking at this page by counting the four candles on the Advent wreath and noticing that only one is lit. This Sunday is the first Sunday of Advent.Now look at the church page (page 4). Ask: How is the parish getting ready for Christmas? The tree is called a Jesse Tree. It has ornaments that stand for all the people who waited for Jesus to come: King David (crown), Joseph (colored coat), Mary (rose), Adam and Eve (two people). Count the candles on the Advent wreath. Today is the first week of Advent, so just one candle is lit. Give children time to draw a toy they would like to give.Activity ● A Getting-Ready Puzzle (pages 3–4) Pass out scissors. Turn to page 2. The illustration shows how you can cut pages 3–4 apart to make a puzzle. Children can take the four strips, mix them up, and then put them back together again. Help the children cut their puzzles or send Seeds home so their families can help them do so.Closing Prayer Gather the children in the circle and pray:Leader: Come, Jesus, our brother.Children: Come, Jesus, our brother.Leader: Help us get ready for your birthday. Ask: Who do we remember today? Jesus. Explain that we remember Jesus all during the year, but at certain times, we remember special events in Jesus’ life.Children love birthdays, especially their own. Ask: When is your birthday? Who else remembers your birthday? Point out that the Church remembers Jesus’ birthday. Ask: Do you know what the Church calls Jesus’ birthday?Ask the children to look at the illustration of the Advent wreath. Ask: Do you remember what this is called?Explain that Advent means “coming.” Advent is the time just before Christmas when we are waiting to celebrate Jesus’ birthday. During this time, we are getting ready for Jesus. We clean and decorate our homes. We try to get our hearts ready by being kind to others. We help out at home by picking up toys and going to bed on time without complaining.Direct the children to complete the words Advent and Christmas on the page.
