Teaching This Week’s LessonShare ExperiencesObjective The children will appreciate gift-giving as a sign of love.Gather in a circle. Play and sing “Jesus Is Coming” (CD-1, #7) to begin your class gathering.Gathering Prayer The children respond, “We are waiting” to each line of the prayer:“Come, Jesus, come.Mary and Joseph are ready. The crib is ready for you. And we are ready too.”Activity ● Getting Ready for Christmas Stay in the circle. Point to the Advent wreath and bring out the candle from last week. Ask: What do you remember about these? Tell the children this Sunday is the 2nd Sunday of Advent. Fold your candle so it becomes shorter and the panel with the Christmas tree is right beneath the flame. Ask: What are you doing to get ready for Christmas? Allow each child to tell one thing.Story ● Jenny Gets Ready for Christmas Tell the children the following story of how Jenny got ready for Christmas:Jenny was very busy making gifts for her family. She decorated an old vase with glue, yarn, and pretty stones. That was for Grandma. She helped Mom bake Dad’s special peanut butter cookies and pack them in a box with waxed paper between the layers. For her brother Joe, she made a huge popcorn ball with nuts and caramel. Last of all, she decorated Mom’s empty perfume bottle with colored sparkles.Jenny was very pleased with the gifts she had made. She hoped her family would be pleased. Then Jenny decided to have a fun way of giving the gifts. First, she wrapped all four gifts with different colored paper. Then she made an ornament for the Christmas tree the same shape and color as each gift. Instead of putting a name tag on the gifts she had made and wrapped, Jenny put the names on the ornaments. On Christmas Day, each member of her family would have to first find the ornament with his or her name on it and then find the gift that was the same shape and color. Jenny was so excited she could hardly wait until Christmas.Activity ● Match the Shapes (page 2) Move with the children to the worktables and distribute Seeds. Direct the children to open to page 2 and look at the Christmas tree. Ask: Which present under the tree is the same shape as Joe’s popcorn ball present? Round. Have them find Joe’s gift and color it the same color as the round ornament. Ask: Can you guess what presents are in the other packages under the tree? Dad’s cookies—square. Mom’s perfumebottle—triangle. Grandma’s vase—odd shape. Be sure the children color each gift the same color as the ornament.Activity ● Stretch Invite the children to stand. Then lead them in this stretching activity:Reach for the ceiling, reach for the sky. Be a bird and start to fly.Be a frog and hop all around.Be a stone and sit on the ground.Discover Gospel and DoctrineObjective The children will hear how Jesus learned about God.Play and sing “Two Little Ears” (CD-1, #4) to prepare for the proclamation of the Gospel.Sunday Gospel ● Jesus learned stories about God. (page 1) Gather the children in the story area with their copies of Seeds. Have them look at the cover. Tell them this is a picture of Jesus and his cousin John when they were young boys. They went to school just as we do. They did not have books like ours. They had pieces of heavy paper that rolled up called scrolls. When Jesus was a little child, he went to school and read the stories about how much God loves and helps God’s people. He learned about God’s promise to come and be with his people.Jesus had a cousin named John. John was the same age as Jesus. He learned the stories about God too. John became a teacher and taught people that God promised to come and be with them. “Make a road for God to walk on,” John said. “Make your house a place for God to come.” People from all over came to learn from John.John lived in the desert. He wore a shirt made of camel hair and ate grasshoppers for his food. John told the people, “God is coming to help us. Get ready. I will baptize you in water to show that you are ready.”Refer to the cover illustration again. Tell the children that when John grew up, people called him John the Baptist. One day, he even baptized his cousin Jesus.Activity ● Stretch and Sing Lead the children to their worktables while singing “The Promise, Part 2” (CD-2, #3).Distribute the children’s What the Church Believes and Teaches handbooks.TG2-18Jesus learned stories about God.PFLAUM GOSPEL WEEKLIES Faith Formation ProgramDecember 10, 20172nd Sunday of Advent
