December 25, 2017 and January 7, 2018Christmas and EpiphanyChristmas Readings: Isaiah 9:1–6; Titus 2:11–14; Luke 2:1–14 Epiphany Readings: Isaiah 60:1–6; Ephesians 3:2–3a, 5–6; Matthew 2:1–12For Catechists and TeachersScripture BackgroundThe Christmas narrative in the Gospel of Luke emphasizes the humble circumstances in which God took on human flesh. Luke also tells of the great joy with which ordinary shepherds and the hosts of Heaven welcomed this event. Matthew’s story of the Magi who seek the new king of Israel shows that Jesus came for all people.Connecting Scripture and DoctrineYoung children’s understanding of what the birth of Jesus really means is limited, but they do understand that Jesus is a very special person in their lives. It is good to help the children understand that Jesus did not remain a baby but continued to grow just as they do.“In the mystery of his incarnation, Christ has united himself to every human being. He is the perfect man who reveals to all human beings their own true nature and their eternal destiny in communion with God. If we seek to know ourselves and the meaning of our lives, we should look to Christ” (NDC, 25H). See also CCC, 2628.“Christ calls all the faithful to proclaim the Good News everywhere in the world and to hand his message on to successive generations” (NDC, 15).
