November 19, 2017 • 33rd Sunday in Ordinary TimeSunday Readings: Proverbs 31:10–13, 19–20, 30–31; 1 Thessalonians 5:1–6; Matthew 25:14–30For Catechists and TeachersScripture BackgroundThis Sunday’s Gospel parable is about an employer who goes off on a journey. He calls in three of his workers, gives them money, and asks them to use it while he is away. When he returns, the employer finds that two of the workers have doubled his money but one has simply buried it. The employer is irate. The message is clear. We are to use what gifts we have been given.Connecting Scripture and DoctrineYoung children cannot relate this parable to their own experience. Seeds provides instead a version of Jesus’ story that has children helping each other recognize they have talents they can try to use.“Since it is composed of human beings made in God’s image and called to communion with him, human society ought to be primarily ordered to the spiritual dimension of the human persons who constitute it. Respect for the inherent dignity of every human person is the foundation of a just society, and its ultimate end is the development of those persons to their fullest potential” (National Directory for Catechesis, 43A). See also Catechism of the Catholic Church, 124–27, 134, 470, 483, 531.Sharing the Lesson with FamiliesEncourage parents to help their child recognize his or her special talents and to use these gifts and share them with others. Suggest that family members draw pictures of themselves using a special talent and display the pictures in their home.Single-Session Lesson Pacing GuidesNote: These pacing guides are suggestions for how to present the lesson.
