Sunday Readings: Job 7:1–4, 6–7;
1 Corinthians 9:16–19, 22–23; Mark 1:29–39
For Catechists and Teachers
Scripture Background
In Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus brings happiness and healing to Peter’s mother-in- law and to the many sick people who crowd around her door.
Connecting Scripture and Doctrine
In this Promise lesson, the children will explore ways they can imitate Jesus’ compassion and love for people. They will learn about how the Church carries on Jesus’ ministry of healing in the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. The children will make Care Cards for parish members who are sick and for residents of nursing homes.
“Crowds of people from every walk of life came to the seashore to listen to Jesus proclaim the coming of the kingdom. The message of salvation in Jesus Christ is intended for all people” (NDC, 52). See also CCC, 544, 1503.
Sharing the Lesson with Families
Jesus demonstrates his power to make people whole in Sunday’s Gospel. Happiness is the word children know that most fully expresses the biblical idea of the wholeness Jesus brings when he heals. Encourage parents to praise their child for all the happiness he or she brings into the family.
