Share Experiences
Objective The children will describe ways people care for them and ways they can care for others.
Gather in a circle and sing “Yes, Lord, I Believe” (CD-2, #26) to start your class session.
Gathering Prayer “God, you give us people to love and who love and care for us. Thank you for sending Jesus to us to show us how much you love us.” The children respond, “Amen.”
Activity ● I can show I care. (page 2) Distribute pages 1–2 of Promise and direct the children to place then on the floor in front of them so they can listen to this story poem about a brother and sister. They will have to listen closely because there are questions in the poem they can answer.
Mom said, “Ted, help me clean up this mess.” Ted nodded and answered yes.
Mom said, “Beth, will you please go
And help your brother?” Beth said no.
Ted started to clean and sweep
He got very tired and fell asleep.
Beth decided to pick up the broom.
She cleaned and straightened the whole room. Which child said yes? Which child said no? Which was the one to change and grow?
“Beth,” said her mom, “can your sister Tess Use your new crayons?” Beth said yes. “Ted, please help Tess color so I can go And make our lunch.” Ted said no.
Tess broke the red crayon and broke the black. Beth took all the crayons back.
Tess started crying. Ted felt sad.
They played together until Tess was glad. Which child said yes? Which child said no? Which was the one to change and grow?
Who is a good child? Can you guess? Are both children good? Yes! Yes! Yes!
Direct the children to turn Promise to page 2 and retell the story to you using the two bands of illustrations. Distribute scissors and demonstrate how to cut on the heavy horizontal line near the bottom of page 2 and then on the heavy vertical line. The children will have a yes and no version of Beth and Ted. Have them fold on the dotted lines. Go around the room taping the figures so each child has two finger puppets. Read the story poem again, inviting the children to use the puppets to show which child is saying yes
and which is saying no. Conclude by saying that we can always change and grow.
If time allows, make up other situations in which children can choose to say yes or no. Invite the children to show you with the puppets which they choose.
Activity ● What’s Your Favorite? Gather in the open area. Invite the children to join hands in a circle, then step back
as far as they can while still holding hands. Direct them to drop hands and take two more steps backward. They will now have enough room to play this game. Show the children the rubber ball and tell them you will ask a question that each child will get to answer. It will be a simple question, such as “What is the best pet to have?”You will bounce the ball to a child who answers and who then bounces the ball to another child. The last child bounces the ball back to you, and you ask another question for everyone to answer. Other possible questions:
●  What’s your favorite TV show?
●  What’s your favorite food?
●  What’s the best thing to do at recess?
Keep the action moving so the children get plenty of chances to catch the bouncing ball, answer the question, and bounce the ball on to someone else.
Activity ● Stretch and Sing Lead the children around the room as you play and sing “God’s Love Is...” (CD-2, #6).
Discover Gospel and Doctrine
Objective The children will recognize that Jesus cares for those who are left out.
Play and sing “Gospel Acclamation” (CD-2, #24). Lead the children in tracing a cross on their foreheads, lips, and hearts. Pray: “We pray for God’s Word to be in our minds, on our lips, and in our hearts.”
Sunday Gospel ● Jesus cares for everyone. (page 1) Direct the children to place their copies of Promise on the floor in front of them as they listen to this Gospel story:
In Jesus’ time, people with leprosy, which was a bad skin disease, were left out of everything. They had to stay away from all other people so no one else would catch their sickness. (Find the leper in the illustration—lower left.) In the market, women were buying oranges and children were playing with other children. (Find the market.) But the leper had to stay away from the market. Near the door to the synagogue courtyard, children were playing games and grown-ups were going inside to pray. (Find the door at upper right.) But the leper had to stay away from them. The leper couldn’t even go
