      For Catechists and Teachers
 We Are Jesus’ Followers
Jesus calls people to be part of the new community of his followers. In the Gospels of this unit, many people take him up on the invitation. Peter, Andrew, James, and John leave their boats. Peter’s mother-in-law leaves her sickbed. The healed leper tells the Good News about Jesus to everyone he meets.
The stories and activities in this unit will help the children respond to Jesus’ call in their lives. They will learn the following lessons:
• Jesus calls his followers.
• Jesus is our teacher.
• Jesus brings healing and happiness.
• Jesus cares for everyone.
• Jesus is faithful to God.
• Jesus is God’s Son.
• Jesus stands up for the Temple.
• Jesus teaches us to love the truth.
Every Promise lesson supports the children’s commitment to
the Sunday Eucharist and explores their experiences of parish community, the place they are called to renew their commitment to Jesus.
Primary children need hands-on, concrete, cooperative experiences. They need the variety of working collaboratively with others as a class or in small groups as well as individually on
their own. The lesson plan for each week provides step-by-step instructions for directing the activities. Reading this Teaching Guide ahead of time will clarify the objective of the activities and will allow you to allocate the appropriate amount of time for it. The activities are varied to provide for the many kind of learners in religious education classes.
Overview of Unit 3
Sometimes the Sunday Gospels are difficult for children to listen to. That is not true for these Sundays. Jesus is very active and engaged with people—inviting, touching, listening, healing, and forgiving. In consequence, the number of his followers grows by leaps and bounds.
The Winter Sundays of Ordinary Time immerse the Church in the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry as Mark shares about it in his Gospel. Jesus’ baptism (celebrated on Monday, January 8 this year) marks the beginning of his teaching and healing ministry. The teaching, healing, and calling of disciples that Jesus does
in the first weeks of his ministry bring God’s kingdom near for the people of Galilee and reveals the wholeness God wishes for individuals and humankind. Jesus invites people to repent and believe the Good News. His words and works reveal him as the Messiah.
Christ’s compassion toward the sick and his many healings of every kind of infirmity are a sign that God has visited the people
