                                           March 11, 2018 • 4th Sunday of Lent
Sunday Readings: 2 Chronicles 36:14–16, 19–23; Ephesians 2:4–10; John 3:14–21
             For Catechists and Teachers
Scripture Background
In Sunday’s Gospel, Nicodemus comes to talk to Jesus at night. Perhaps he is afraid that the other Pharisees will see him. Jesus encourages Nicodemus by saying, “I am the light.”
Connecting Scripture and Doctrine
We live out Jesus’ call to love one another by forgiving others. Promise explores our Christian call to forgive others. Young children know when they have hurt someone or done something mean or wrong, and they need to know they are forgiven. They can also learn that forgiving others is a way we live out Jesus’ command to love one another.
“Catechesis for life in Christ...is a catechesis about sin and forgiveness that helps us confront our sinfulness and accept God’s mercy” (NDC, 40). See also CCC, 620.
Sharing the Lesson with Families
Encourage parents to enjoy the forgiveness stories in Promise with their child. Suggest that they help their child grow into a forgiving person by remembering to ask for forgiveness when they (the parents) are sorry.
Editor’s Note: Just as we have the option to use the color rose on the 3rd Sunday
of Advent as a sign of our joy, we may also use rose on the 4th Sunday of Lent. This Sunday is known as Laetare Sunday. Laetare (like Advent’s Gaudete) refers to rejoicing. Christians rejoice in the salvation gained for us by Christ’s suffering, Death, and Resurrection.
