Sunday Readings: Job 7:1–4, 6–7;
1 Corinthians 9:16–19, 22–23; Mark 1:29–39
        For Catechists and Teachers
Scripture Background
In Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus continues his ministry of teaching and healing. Peter and his wife ask Jesus to heal the wife’s mother. Jesus heals her, and she begins to serve them. Mark concludes this story by having Jesus go out to the neighboring villages to tell the Good News about God. Perhaps Peter’s mother-in-law went along and stayed with Jesus through his public life, Crucifixion, and Resurrection.
Connecting Scripture and Doctrine
This family-centered story tells us how important it is to bring joy and happiness to others, especially those we live with. Seeds focuses on family in this issue. Preschool children need to feel part of a loving family so they can believe in a God who is loving and caring. It is within the family unit that children begin to understand belonging and acceptance.
“Crowds of people from every walk of life came to the seashore to listen to Jesus proclaim the coming of the kingdom. The message of salvation in Jesus Christ is intended for all people” (NDC, 52). See also CCC, 544, 1503.
Sharing the Lesson with Families
Children know what it is like to be sick and are aware of ways people show care and love for them at those times. Encourage parents to reach out to a neighbor, family member, or friend who is ill.
