Sunday Readings: Leviticus 13:1–2, 44–46; 1 Corinthians 10:31—11:1; Mark 1:40–45
        For Catechists and Teachers
Scripture Background
In Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus is moved with compassion for a leper, a person who was an outcast of society. The leper, whose faith in Jesus brought him to ask for healing, is so moved by this sign of God’s love that he tells the Good News everywhere he goes. So much so, Mark tells us, that Jesus could no longer enter a town openly.
Connecting Scripture and Doctrine
Young children love to tell good news. Valentine’s Day is a chance to tell the good news of their loving relationships by giving and receiving valentines. Seeds provides a valentine ribbon that reminds the children of the love of their family and friends and the love Jesus has for them.
“Catechesis not only reveals God’s identity but, in doing so, reveals the deepest truths about human beings: that we are made in God’s image, that we are religious beings by nature, that the desire for God is written on our hearts, that God never ceases to draw us to himself, and that we are made to live in communion with him” (NDC, 25H). See also CCC, 620.
Sharing the Lesson with Families
Encourage families to make Valentine’s Day a celebration of God’s love and their love for each other. This week’s Seeds activity helps children make a concrete expression of our belief that God’s love for us is the source of our love for each other.
