 For Catechists and Teachers
Scripture Background
In Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus goes to the Temple in Jerusalem. He finds people buying and selling oxen, sheep, and doves in the courtyards of the Temple. Others are changing money for the many pilgrims who have come to Jerusalem to celebrate Passover. Jesus chases them all out, saying that the Temple is the house of God, not a marketplace.
Connecting Scripture and Doctrine
Children like this story because it shows Jesus as a person who gets angry and takes
on people who are doing the wrong thing. They can understand that Jesus’ love and respect for his Father is the motive for his behavior. This Seeds lesson helps the children understand what behavior goes with what place, stressing that praying to God is appropriate anytime and anywhere.
“Sin wounds the loving relationship that God has initiated with his creatures. It is an offense against God that turns the human heart away from his love. It wounds human nature and injures human solidarity” (NDC, 42D).
Sharing the Lesson with Families
Let parents know that this week, Seeds focuses on prayer. While some young children may not be ready to pray on their own, it is worthwhile to introduce them to this important practice of the Christian community. Encourage parents to pray with their child at home and to ask their child to share his or her prayer book.
