Jesus has power not only to heal, but also to forgive sins. He has come to heal the whole person (see CCC, 1503).
Following those four Sundays in Ordinary Time are the first
four Sundays of Lent. The Gospels for the first two Lenten Sundays are from Mark’s Gospel. Mark sets Jesus in furious motion in his narrative. Jesus strides the seashore, calls disciples, heals, casts out demons, and preaches. Mark’s stories are short, shifting quickly from one scene to the next. With Jesus’ every step, God’s dynamic healing and liberating power breaks into the human community. The Gospels for the 3rd and 4th Sundays of Lent come from John’s Gospel. Readings from the Gospel of John appear in all three Lectionary cycles, especially during the seasons of Advent- Christmas and Lent-Easter.
Seeds helps young children know they belong in the community of those who follow Jesus today—the Church. Through stories and sense involving activities, they explore how they can be recognized as little people who live Jesus’ way.
Pay special attention to the Jesus art in this unit of Seeds. What children see early in life stays in their imaginations forever. Seeds pictures Jesus as the Gospel writers picture him—a man full
of the Holy Spirit and driven to tell the Good News of God’s love for us. Seeds portrays Jesus as vigorous, attentive, inviting, and
compassionate. Ask questions that help the children interpret the Jesus art. Some examples: What is Jesus saying? How does he feel? What are the people with him saying? How do they feel? What will happen next?
Keeping Lent
Seeds children are at a great age for learning about Lent and beginning to participate in Lenten practices. They like the feeling that comes with getting to do things the “big kids” and adults do, such as receiving ashes on Ash Wednesday and making sacrifices or doing something extra during Lent. Encourage parents to use the Family Corner features on the lessons the children bring home and make this Lent a special time in their families.
