Distribute crayons and invite the children to finish coloring the picture. Note the last thing Jesus says in the Gospel: “Together we will tell everyone that God loves us all very much.”That is what Jesus is doing in the picture. Ask: How can little children follow Jesus?
Gospel Creative Drama Demonstrate the action of rowing a boat and throwing a net over the side. Act as the leader or choose a child to lead. The leader says to another child, “Leave your nets. Leave your boat. Come, follow me.”The chosen person joins the leader, and they walk about the room. The two return to the circle and say to a third child, “Leave your nets. Leave your boat. Come, follow me.”The three walk about the room. Continue until everyone has joined Jesus’ followers.
Activity ● Jesus says, “Follow me!” (pages 2–3) Have the children gather in the work area with their copies
of Seeds. Have them retell the Gospel story to you, using the illustrations on pages 2–3. Distribute crayons and invite them to follow the dotted lines of the nets so the fish will stay in them.
Distribute the children’s What the Church Believes and Teaches handbooks.
Live the Gospel
Objective The children will create a fish mobile.
Activity ● Making a Fish Mobile (pages 3–4) Distribute the fish you cut from pages 3–4. Help the children print their names. Read the sentence to the children and talk about what it means. We are followers of Jesus when we go to church, learn about Jesus, are kind to others, share our toys, play nicely, or listen to our parents and teachers.
Collect the fish and make a classroom mobile or mobiles as shown in the small illustration on page 3. If you have small photos of the children, use those along with, or instead of, writing the names.
Activity ● I follow Jesus at home. (page 4) Tell the children that they are to take the this chart home to share with their parents. When the child does an action at home that follows Jesus’ example of loving, including, or forgiving, the parents write it on the chart and invite the child to color the fish by those words. Brainstorm ways the children can follow Jesus at home.
Closing Prayer “Jesus, thank you for calling us to be your followers. We will try to follow your example of love at home, at school, and at play.” The children respond, “Amen.”
Lead the children in singing “Follow Me” (CD-1, #10) and doing the actions.
Remind the children to share their Gospel Weeklies with their families and to do the Family Corner activities and prayer together.
What the Church Believes and Teaches
The Bible Tells Us Stories About Jesus (page 22)
Gather in your prayer space. Invite one child to carry the Bible to you, perhaps holding it high as they might see at Mass. Read the account of Jesus welcoming children (Matthew 19:13–15). When you finish reading, ask: What does this story tell us about Jesus?
Help the children find page 22 in their Catechism handbooks. Read the words at the top of the page. Ask: Can you find Jesus? Direct them to notice the little children.
Read the word under the illustration. Invite the children to color the word Come. Encourage them to think about this Gospel and look at this picture often. When they do, suggest they say this prayer: “Jesus, I will always come to you.”
Have the children close the What the Church Believes and Teaches handbooks.
