Sunday Readings: Acts 3:13–15, 17–19; 1 John 2:1–5a; Luke 24:35–48
           For Catechists and Teachers
Scripture Background
In Sunday’s Gospel, the Risen Jesus appears to his friends on Easter night with a message of peace and forgiveness. They have been together in a house ever since Jesus’ Crucifixion and Death. They have learned that Jesus’ tomb is empty, and Mary Magdalen has seen the Risen Jesus. Still, they spend that day in fear and puzzlement until Jesus comes. It’s a sign of Jesus’ great tenderness for his friends that he wishes them peace.
Connecting Scripture and Doctrine
It’s a privilege to explore the Easter message of peace and reconciliation with young children. Let them tell you how they experience peace and forgiveness. Practice being peaceful and forgiving with each other during this Promise session.
“We who are made in God’s image share [God’s] communal, social nature. We are called to reach out and to build relationships of love and justice” (NDC, 43). See also CCC, 1111.
Sharing the Lesson with Families
Jesus returns to his friends on Easter to give them his gift of peace. Encourage parents to talk with their child about the Sign of Peace at Mass and make sure their child understands it as wishing one’s neighbors peace and friendship. Suggest that they make this a week to promote family peace—working through conflicts that keep kids or parents squabbling.
