What the Church Believes and Teaches
Holy Days and Feast Days (page 19)
Make matching cards for a memory game to highlight that remembering is an important part of our feasts and liturgical seasons. Let the children play the game in groups of 2–4. The following are a few ideas of cards to include:
WORDS Advent Christmas Lent Easter Mary Saints
PICTURES
Advent wreath
Nativity scene
crucifix
Risen Jesus
Mary and Baby Jesus collage of several saints
Help the children learn more about saints:
l Read a picture book about a saint featured on this page. l Share information about the patron saint of your parish or
another popular saint.
l Choose two saints whose feast days occur this month. Tell
the children about the saints and have a coloring page or
other activity to honor them.
l Read the Opening Prayer (Collect) from the Mass for their
feast days.
l Invite another adult to share about one of their favorite
saints.
Have the children close the What the Church Believes and Teaches handbooks and return to Promise, page 3.
     Live the Gospel
Objective The children will recognize they offer peace during the Sign of Peace at Mass.
Activity l Who Can Bring Peace? (page 3) Distribute scissors. Demonstrate how to cut off the strip of people on page 3 and cut the strip into five pieces. Direct the children to place their pieces faceup in front of them and find the persons you describe:
l This man talks to us about Jesus and celebrates the Mass and other
l This person could be a teacher or principal, a mom or a doctor. Children find the woman.
l This person could be your sister, a friend at school, or a neighbor. Children find the girl.
l This person could be a teacher or a coach, a dad or a store owner. Children find the man.
l This is Jesus. Children find Jesus.
Call attention to the four scenes on page 3. Invite a volunteer
to describe the playground scene. Ask: How can one of the five people help bring peace to this situation? Continue with the other scenes. Make sure they understand that each of us can help bring peace too.
Activity l My Peace Banner (page 2) Ask: What do people say to each other when they exchange the Sign of Peace
at Mass? Explain that they will make a peace banner to remind them of Jesus’ gift to them and their gift of love and peace to their friends. Direct them to turn to Promise, page 2.
Give the children time to color the hidden message, cut out the banner, punch a hole where indicated, pull yarn through, and tie a knot leaving a long loop. Hang the banner on the end of a straw or stick and secure with tape.
Closing Prayer l Jesus Calls Us to Make Peace (page 4) Gather the children in a prayer circle with their banners on the floor in front of them and page 4 of Promise
in their hands. Assign parts for the prayer service. Invite them
to stand and hold their banners high and say the Lord’s Prayer together. Close by offering each other a sign of peace.
After the children have shared a sign of peace, invite them to sing “New Life” (CD-2, #1).
Remind the children to share their Gospel Weeklies with their families and to do the Family Corner activities and prayer together.
