Scripture Background
In Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus compares himself to a good shepherd who cares for and protects his sheep. A shepherd leads his flock to pasture and keeps them safe.
Connecting Scripture and Doctrine
Even though few people care for sheep in our society, this image still has power. Children often care for pets. They understand what it takes to keep a pet healthy and happy.
They can also recognize and appreciate the many people who care for them. From
these experiences, they can image Jesus as someone who loves and cares for them as their teachers and parents do. Since this Sunday is also Earth Day, Promise connects a shepherd’s care for his sheep to our responsibility to care for God’s Creation.
“All catechesis occurs within the life of a worshiping community. Drawn together by the Holy Spirit, this community gives praise and thanks to God” (NDC, 31). See also CCC, 807, 937–944, 1111.
Sharing the Lesson with Families
Encourage parents to help their child notice the many people who care for them like shepherds—crossing guards, bus drivers, police officers, grandparents, neighbors. Suggest that parents talk with their child about how he or she cares for a family pet and how the family cares for God’s Creation.
