How are people in this neighborhood caring for Creation?
Share Experiences
Objective The children will understand how they can care for people, pets, and Creation.
Gather in a circle and sing “He Is Risen, Alleluia!” (CD-2, #2) to start your class session.
Gathering Prayer Pray: “Jesus, you give us parents and teachers and friends to love us and take care of us. Thank you, Jesus. Help us to show love and care back to them and to you.”The children respond, “Amen.”
Cover Activity l We care for Creation. (pages
1 & 4) Move to the work area. Ask: What does the word Creation mean? They may see it as God’s act of bringing everything into being, or they may think of all the different living and non-living things that are part of our world and our universe. Give them plenty of time to share their thoughts, then distribute Promise.
Invite the children to read aloud the title on page 1. Ask: How are the people in this neighborhood caring for Creation? Two
areas need attention—the tree with litter around it and the plastic bottles on the ground. The children will be curious about the rectangular shapes. Direct them to turn to page 4. Distribute scissors and glue. Direct them to cut out the three shapes and glue them where they belong on the cover illustration. Three more ways of caring for Creation are now evident.
Ask: In what other ways could these people care for Creation? How do you and your family care for Creation at homes, at school, and in your neighborhood?
Story l Becca and James are good shepherds. (page 2) Direct the children to keep their Promise copies closed while you tell this story:
Becca and James followed their dad to the shed almost every morning because they liked to help find new lambs. The mother sheep often had twins or even triplets, but sometimes the mothers didn’t have enough milk for so many lambs.
One morning, Becca and James found three new lambs lying beside their mother. One lamb was strong and sucking milk from its mother; the other two were too weak to nurse. Becca and James picked up the lambs and took them to the house. They took the lambs to a warm spot on a rug near their wood stove. They filled a bottle of milk for each lamb and put the big rubber nipple on the bottles. They rubbed the lambs’ curly wool. Becca held the bottle, and James stroked each lamb’s throat to make it swallow milk and get strong.
Becca and James spent all morning with their lambs. After lunch, the lambs slept. Right before dinner, the lambs woke up. First one stood and then the other. The lambs slipped and fell on the smooth
kitchen floor so Becca and James took them to the warm pen in the shed. Every day, Becca and James returned to feed the lambs until they could eat grass.
Have the children turn to Promise, page 2, and look at the illustration of Becca and James feeding the weak lambs. Give the children time to find the 11 other sheep hidden on the page, as well as the sheep dog and the wolf. Distribute crayons and give them time to color the page.
Activity l Stretch and Sing Lead the children in singing “Old MacDonald Had a Farm.” Invite them to line up behind you. Lead them in a silly walk. When you get to the animal sounds, stop, invite them to make the appropriate animal sound, and then continue walking.
Discover Gospel and Doctrine
Objective The children will become familiar with Jesus as the Good Shepherd.
Activity l Gospel Warm-Up Gather the children seated in the area you set aside for the Gospel storytelling. Ask: What do you remember about the cover activity? What did you learn from the story about Becca and James and the baby lambs? James and Becca were shepherds, people who take care of sheep. Ask: Have you ever heard God or Jesus called a shepherd? They may be aware of art or music on this theme. Tell the children that in today’s Gospel, Jesus tells his friends that he is the Good Shepherd.
Play and sing “Gospel Acclamation” (CD-2, #24) as preparation for the proclamation of the Gospel.
Sunday Gospel l Jesus is the Good Shepherd. Tell the children that where Jesus lived, there were lots of sheep. People made clothes and warm blankets from their wool and drank the sheep’s milk to become strong. People wanted to keep their sheep safe and healthy. The people who cared for the sheep are called shepherds.
Jesus told his friends, “I am the good shepherd. I know my sheep, and my sheep know me.” Jesus’ friends knew about sheep and shepherds. They knew that a good shepherd builds a pen of stones so the wolf can’t get in and hurt the sheep. They knew that a good shepherd sleeps on the ground in the opening to the sheep pen
so nothing can get in to hurt the sheep at night. Jesus’ friends
knew that a good shepherd leads the sheep to food and water and watches so the sheep don’t get lost or fall over cliffs or into holes. Jesus’ friends followed Jesus like sheep follow a good shepherd. They knew that Jesus loved them and would take care of them like a shepherd cares for his sheep.
