 Explain to the children that Jesus is our shepherd too. Jesus cares for us and keeps us safe. He wants us to trust him and follow him like sheep trust and follow their shepherd.
  Distribute the children’s What the Church Believes and Teaches handbooks.
Live the Gospel
Objective The children will recognize people in their lives who care for them.
Activity l Jesus is our Good Shepherd. (pages 3–4) Invite the children to turn to page 4. Read the sentence at the top of the page. Direct the children to cut out the two pictures on the heavy lines. Show your finished stand-up shepherd so the children can make theirs match. The sides with the faces should face the front.
Ask: Who is part of Jesus’ flock? Give the children pieces of paper on which they can write the names or draw pictures,
then put the names in the sheep pen behind Jesus. Or invite the children to think of people who especially need help or protection and put their names in the pen.
If possible, display a statue or image of Jesus as the Good Shepherd. Invite the children to tell you what they see. Retell the Gospel story.
Closing Prayer Gather in the prayer circle. Invite the children to repeat each line of this prayer after you:
Jesus, we know you are our Good Shepherd.
You love us all and take care of us.
Please help the people and places we care about. We trust you and we love you.
What the Church Believes and Teaches
Your Parish (page 17)
 Move to the work area. Distribute the pictures the children drew of your church from the March 25th lesson. Invite them to look at their pictures as you read about your parish. Talk about how people in your parish do each of these things together.
Invite the children to add some pictures around their church buildings to show people praying, learning in class, helping others, and having fun. Encourage the children
to draw things that your parish does, such as running a food pantry, holding a parish festival, or playing softball or volleyball. Ask: What do you love about being part of our parish?
Tell the children that their pictures need one final touch—a name. Ask: What is the name of our parish? Print the name of your parish on the board. Give the children time to copy it on their pictures and in their books. Encourage the children to take their finished drawings home to share with their families.
Move on to the text about the priest. Help the children understand that the pastor takes care of the people of the parish. Print the name of your pastor on the board. Give the children time to copy his name in their books. Discuss what your pastor does for the parish.
Show the children a picture of our Pope and tell them his name. Read about the Pope. Print his name on the board so they can copy it into their books. Encourage them to listen for the Pope’s name the next time they go to Mass. Explain that we always pray for him and for the whole Church at Mass.
Have the children close the What the Church Believes and Teaches handbooks and return to Promise, pages 3–4.
 Play and sing “New Life” (CD-2, #1) to bring your Promise session to a close.
Remind the children to share their Gospel Weeklies with their families and to do the Family Corner activities and prayer together.
