Distribute the children’s What the Church Believes and Teaches handbooks.
to circle the words that complete the prayer. Continue in the same manner with the other pages of the booklet. If time is limited, you may choose to read through the booklet and have the children complete the activities later.
Closing Prayer Invite the children to bring their copies
of their Mass booklets to the prayer circle. Remind them that
the Mass is the best way to remember Jesus and to praise God
for sending Jesus to us. Read the booklet as a group or with individuals reading each page. Pray: “Loving God, thank you
for the gift of Jesus, the communities we belong to, and for the beauty of all your Creation. Help us to always stay connected to Jesus like branches are connected to a vine.”The children respond, “Amen.”
Close your prayer and gathering by singing “New Life” (CD-2, #1).
Remind the children to share their Gospel Weeklies with their families and to do the Family Corner activities and prayer together.
What the Church Believes and Teaches
Prayers for You to Know: Glory Be to the Father (page 30)
Help the children locate page 30 in their Catechism handbooks. They will soon be taking these books home with them and will need to know where to find the prayers to continue learning and praying them during the summer months.
Review the Sign of the Cross and note that we name the Three Persons of the Trinity in it. Explain that the Glory Be to the Father is a prayer of praise to God. In it, we name the Three Persons of God in the Trinity too. Help the children learn this prayer by saying a line and asking them to repeat that line after you. You may also wish to share this hint with parents.
Have the children close the What the Church Believes and Teaches handbooks and return to Promise, pages 3–4.
      Live the Gospel
Objective The children will create a Mass booklet.
Activity l “I belong at church” Booklet (pages 3–4) Gather at the worktables and distribute scissors and pages 3–4 of Promise. Show the children how to cut on the heavy dark horizontal line to create two rectangles. Direct them to fold the top rectangle so the booklet title shows. Then direct them to
fold the bottom rectangle so the illustration of the two children holding their Promise lessons shows. Demonstrate how to nest the two folded pages together to make a booklet. Page through the booklets with the children, making sure the page numbers are in order. Collect the scissors and distribute pencils, colored pencils, or crayons.
Direct the children to place their booklets faceup on their
desks and read the cover sentence. Ask: What is happening in the illustration? A parish family is gathered for Mass. Invite the children to turn to page 2 and read that sentence. Give the children time
