Sunday Readings: Acts 10:25–26, 34–35, 44–48; 1 John 4:7–10; John 15:9–17
For Catechists and Teachers
Scripture Background
Sunday’s Gospel comes from Jesus’words of farewell to his disciples at the Last Supper. It’s a summary of his message of love.
Connecting Scripture and Doctrine
God sent Jesus to show the unlimited love God has for us. We respond by imitating that love for those around us.
Catholics especially honor Mary in May. This Promise lesson features Mary and her role as loving mother in Jesus’ life and in our own.
“Jesus makes charity the new commandment. By loving his own ‘to the end’ (John 13:10), he makes manifest the Father’s love which he receives. By loving one another, the disciples imitate the love of Jesus which they themselves receive. Jesus says, ‘As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love.’ And again: ‘This is
my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you’ (John 15:9, 12)” (CCC, 1823).
Sharing the Lesson with Families
Jesus’ one rule is LOVE. His mother Mary is a model of love for Jesus and for us. She shows us how to love and believe in Jesus. Encourage parents to talk with their child about the images of Mary in your home and church. Suggest that they pray the Hail Mary together at meals or bedtime.
