Distribute the children’s What the Church Believes and Teaches handbooks.
them to identity the little pictures. Find one or two of the hidden objects as a group, give the children time to find and circle them all.
Activity l Mary is our mother too. (page 4) Direct the children to turn Promise to page 4. Read the title of the page together. Make sure they understand that Mary is Jesus’ mother and our mother too. Mary feels as tenderly toward each of us as a mother feels about her children. Point out the Hail Mary prayer in the middle of the page. The children will recognize the Hail Mary from earlier lessons.
Direct the children’s attention to the frame around the prayer. Tell them that they will learn one of Mary’s titles by coloring in the spaces that contain dots. Suggest that they color these spaces all the same color. They may wish to color in the other spaces (those without dots) in a variety of colors to look like a stained-glass window. When they have finished, ask: Which title of Mary did you find? Mary, Mother of God.
Closing Prayer Gather in a prayer circle with their copies of Promise turned to page 4. Remind the children that Mary feels as tenderly toward each of us as a mother feels about her children. We can pray to her about our concerns and worries. Pray together the Hail Mary. End your prayer with the Sign of the Cross.
Close your prayer and gathering by singing “Mary, Our Mother” (CD-2, #11).
Remind the children to share their Gospel Weeklies with their families and to do the Family Corner activities and prayer together.
What the Church Believes and Teaches
Prayers for You to Know: Short Prayer of Love (page 30)
Help the children locate page 30 in their Catechism handbooks. They will soon be taking these books home with them and will need to know where to find the prayers to continue learning and praying them during the summer months.
Review the Sign of the Cross and the Glory Be to the Father prayers. Explain that the Short Prayer of Love is another prayer they can memorize and use anytime they want to tell Jesus they love him. Work with the children to help them memorize this prayer.
Write the words of this prayer on the board. Distribute large paper hearts and crayons. Direct the children to print the words of the prayer on their paper hearts. When they have finished, say this prayer together again.
Have the children close the What the Church Believes and Teaches handbooks and return to Promise, page 3.
     Live the Gospel
Objective The children will learn about Mary’s love for Jesus and us.
Activity l Mary is Jesus’ mother. (page 3) Remain at the worktables. Show the image of Mary. Ask: What do you know about Jesus’ mother, Mary? Tell them that Mary
was also a woman like their own mothers. Ask: What kinds of things do mothers do to take care of their families? When enough children have contributed, tell the class that they will now have
a fun time finding some of the activities Mary did at her home in Nazareth with Joseph and Jesus.
Direct the children to turn to page 3 of Promise. Have them fold their copies so only page 3 shows. Read the title aloud. Ask: What are Jesus, Mary, and Joseph doing? What else is in the picture? Direct the children’s attention to the bottom of the page. Invite
