The NEW Gospel Weeklies
For Catechists and Teachers
Scripture Background
In Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus compares himself to a grain of wheat that falls to the earth and dies in order to produce fruit.
Connecting Scripture and Doctrine
Young children aren’t able to understand Jesus’ metaphor, but they are aware of food and eating. The theme of Promise is giving thanks to God for food and life and strength. This is a remote preparation for First Communion.
While young children cannot act selflessly, they can learn from their families, teachers, and parish communities that service to others leads to joy and satisfaction. This prepares them for the moral decision-making to come as they grow. In this lesson, the children create Saint Cards to tell the stories of four followers of Jesus.
“Catechesis links human experience to the revealed word of God, helping people ascribe Christian meaning to their own existence” (National Directory for Catechesis, 29A). See also Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1409.
Sharing the Lesson with Families
Children hear constantly about growing up and acting their age. It can seem to them that they will only be okay when their growing up is over. Encourage parents to affirm their child for all the kind and loving actions he or she is just the right size and age for today.
