  Share Experiences
Objective The children will recognize they have many kinds of feelings.
Gather in a circle and sing “Easter People” (CD-1, #14) to start your class session.
Gathering Prayer The children stand while you pray: “Jesus, we gather together to learn about you. Help us to be loving and kind to each other. Help us to listen well to the stories about you. We love you. Thank you for loving us.”The children respond, “Amen. Alleluia.”
Story l Going Fishing (page 2) Gather the children in a story circle. If you have brought fishing equipment, ask the children to tell you about them and about times they have gone fishing. Share this story:
It was a beautiful summer day, but Jenny was sad because she wanted to go fishing and no one could take her. Her Aunt Joan usually took her fishing, but Aunt Joan had a job in the city.
All week, Jenny asked people to go fishing with her. On Monday, she asked her dad, but he was too busy. On Tuesday, she asked her mom, but she had to stay with the baby. On Wednesday, Jenny asked Mr. Jensen who lived down the road, but he said he didn’t like to fish.
On Wednesday afternoon, Jenny sat on the porch with her fishing pole and tackle box, feeling sad. Her mom noticed her and sat down too. “Why are you sad?” her mom asked. “Because I want to go fishing and Dad won’t go and you won’t go and even Mr. Jensen won’t go.” Jenny and her mom sat there for a while. Then her mom said, “What about Aunt Joan?” Jenny said, “Aunt Joan lives in the city.” Her mom said, “Maybe she will come to go fishing if you ask her.”
Her mom helped Jenny write a letter to Aunt Joan. They dropped it in the mailbox on the corner. Then Jenny waited. She imagined her letter on the truck to the city. She imagined her letter dropped into Aunt Joan’s mailbox. She imagined Aunt Joan reading the letter and going right to the closet where she keeps her fishing things.
When Aunt Joan’s car pulled up on Saturday, Jenny ran to meet her. “Are we going fishing?” she said. “Yes, we are,” said Aunt Joan. She grabbed her fishing pole from the backseat and turned her baseball hat around backward. Jenny turned her hat around too. They walked to the creek and fished off the bridge all afternoon. When they came home, they had caught five fish. Jenny’s was the biggest one of all.
Ask: How did Jenny feel when no one could go fishing with her? How did she feel after she wrote the letter to Aunt Joan? When
Aunt Joan came? While they were fishing? When they
came home with the fish? When her fish was the biggest of all?
Activity l Stretch and Fish Lead the children in a pantomime of fishing:
l  Pick up an imaginary fishing pole from the floor.
l  Throw your arm back and then forward as if casting.
l  Stand quietly waiting for the fish to bite.
l  Pretend you have a bite and hang on to the pole as it pulls you
l  Start to reel in your big fish. Pull back and wind; pull back and
l  Lean over to grab the fish. Pick it up and show everyone what a big
fish you have.
l  Put your fish in a bucket or gently put the fish back in the water. l  Pat yourself on the back for being such a great fisherperson.
Discover Gospel and Doctrine
Objective The children will identify the feelings of Jesus’ friends.
Play and sing “Two Little Ears” (CD-1, #4) to prepare the children for the proclamation of the Gospel.
Sunday Gospel l Jesus appears to his friends. (page 1) Review the Gospel stories of Easter—how Jesus suffered and died and then rose from the dead and appeared to Mary and his other friends. Tell them that this is another story about Jesus:
After Jesus had died, his friends were afraid they might be killed like Jesus. They locked themselves in a room and closed the shutters. Then two of Jesus’ friends came and told how they had met Jesus on the road. They didn’t know he was the Lord until he broke the bread.
Jesus’ friends were talking about this when, suddenly, Jesus
was there with them. He said, “Peace be with you. Why are you so frightened? Why do you doubt? Look at my hands and my feet and see who I am! Touch me and find out for yourselves that it is I.” Then Jesus asked for something to eat. They gave him a piece of baked fish, and he ate it.
Then Jesus told them, “All people of every nation must be told in my name to turn to God to be forgiven. So beginning in Jerusalem, you must tell everything that has happened.”
Distribute pages 1–2 of Seeds. Ask the children to retell the story by describing the cover illustration to you. The children may notice the nail marks in Jesus’ hands and feet. The two people in hats are the travelers who had met Jesus. Talk about the feelings of the people in the picture. They are happy because Jesus is with them
