Sunday Readings: Acts 4:8–12; 1 John 3:1–2; John 10:11–18
        For Catechists and Teachers
Scripture Background
In Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus compares himself to a good shepherd who cares for and protects his sheep. A shepherd leads his flock to pasture and keeps them safe.
Connecting Scripture and Doctrine
Most children will know nothing about sheep and shepherds, so it will be important to talk a bit about what a shepherd does. Then they will understand what it means to say Jesus cares for us as a shepherd cares for the sheep.
Young children depend on the help of families, teachers, and other children. Young children can also be helpers if the tasks they’re asked to do are within their range of abilities. Allowing children to do many things by themselves will encourage them to reach out to others and to be helpers. Seeds helps the children see how their caring for pets, plants, and perhaps siblings is a form of shepherding.
“All catechesis occurs within the life of a worshiping community. Drawn together by the Holy Spirit, this community gives praise and thanks to God” (NDC, 31). See also CCC, 2590.
Sharing the Lesson with Families
Encourage parents to celebrate all that their child has learned about Jesus. Suggest they make a commitment to participate in parish events as a family and to continue to practice acts of love and justice by sharing their talents and resources with others.
