folds together and crease the middle. Now invite the children to tell you how the people have come together. Ask: What loving actions do you see? How have the children in this class shown love today?
Distribute the children’s What the Church Believes and Teaches handbooks.
“I have a special name too. I’m named after Jesus’ mother, Mary.” Mr. Kent agreed, “That is a special name.” Molly raised her hand and said, “My mother is from England. My baptism name is Mary, but Mother says that in England, girls named Mary can be called Molly.”
More hands were waving. Mario said, “My name is the boy way to say Mary. My mother named me after Jesus’ mother because she helped me get born safe.” Lupe said, “Our family is from Mexico. I am named after Our Lady of Guadalupe, who came to Mexico a long time ago.” Mr. Kent smiled. “Are there any more Marys in our class?” he asked. One more hand went up. Miriam said, “In Jesus’ language, his mother was called Miriam. Mary and I have the same name too.” Mr. Kent thanked the children for telling about their names. He promised the other children they could tell about their names the next day.
Ask: Why were so many children named for Mary? What is so special about Mary?
Prayer Activity l The Hail Mary (page 2) Move to the worktables and direct the children to look at page 2 of Seeds. This page will be creased from the cover activity but should still be fully usable. The children will recognize the Hail Mary from earlier lessons. Read it aloud together once. Ask: When have you prayed this prayer? Give them time to color the big letters, flowers, and Mary. Invite them to bring their completed prayers the prayer circle.
Closing Prayer Return to the prayer circle. Remind the children that Mary is Jesus’ mother and our mother too. Mary feels as tenderly toward each of us as a mother feels about her children. We can pray to her about our concerns and worries. Pray together the Hail Mary. End your prayer with the Sign of the Cross.
Close your prayer and gathering by singing “LOVE God” (CD-2, #21).
Remind the children to share their Gospel Weeklies with their families and to do the Family Corner activities and prayer together.
What the Church Believes and Teaches
Words to Know (pages 28–31)
Help the children find page 28 in their Catechism handbooks. Explain that pages 28–31 contain words they learned in Seeds class this year. Next week, you’ll be sending the books home with the children.
Invite the children to look at the pictures on pages 28–31. Start on page 28 and invite volunteers to guess what each picture is. You may have some early readers
in your class who can read the purple words next to each picture. Read the definitions to the children as they look at the pictures. If your time is limited, you may select just a few words to cover today. Be sure to cover the words Mary and mother on page 28.
As time allows, you may make a review game by asking questions: What’s the word for this picture? Who knows what this word means? Where did you hear it before? Is this a word you hear in church?
Have the children close the What the Church Believes and Teaches handbooks and return to Seeds.
             Live the Gospel
Objective The children will learn about Mary.
Story l How Many Marys? Gather in the story circle. Tell the children you know a story about five children. They must listen carefully to learn something special about these children.
Molly, Mary, Miriam, Lupe, and Mario all went to preschool together. One day, their teacher, Mr. Kent, announced a new girl would join their class. Her name is Imani. “Imani means faith,” Mr. Kent told the class. Mary waved her hand. When Mr. Kent called on her, Mary said,
