       March 18, 2018 • 5th Sunday of Lent
Sunday Readings: Jeremiah 31:31–34; Hebrews 5:7–9; John 12:20–33
      For Catechists and Teachers
Scripture Background
In Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus compares himself to a grain of wheat that falls to the earth and dies in order to produce fruit. This grain is planted in the ground and seems to die, but new green sprouts push up through the earth.
Connecting Scripture and Doctrine
Preschool children are not able to understand Jesus’ metaphor, but they are aware of food and eating. The theme of Seeds is giving thanks for the food God has given us and for the many people we share it with. Seeds also gives the children the opportunity to share their understanding of the Eucharist, a remote preparation for First Communion.
“Catechesis links human experience to the revealed word of God, helping people ascribe Christian meaning to their own existence” (National Directory for Catechesis, 29A). See also Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1678.
Sharing the Lesson with Families
You might suggest to parents that they volunteer to take up the gifts at Mass as a family. The bread we bring to the priest in the name of the community will become Jesus’ Body. The children will experience that the Eucharist is the place where we receive the bread Jesus talks about in the Gospel.
