Sunday Readings: Mark 11:1–10; Isaiah 50:4–7; Philippians 2:6–11; Mark 14:1—15:47
        For Catechists and Teachers
Scripture Background
This Sunday begins the special liturgies of Holy Week. The Palm Sunday procession recalls how the people of Jerusalem welcomed Jesus. The Mass that follows includes the reading of the Passion.
Connecting Scripture and Doctrine
Young children aren’t able to grasp the meaning of Jesus’ Passion and Death. However, they can appreciate that Jesus shows them how tenderly and persistently God cares for them. Through their own child-sized reenactment of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, Seeds gives the children an opportunity to show their acceptance of Jesus’ love for them.
“Christ’s saving action in the Paschal Mystery is celebrated in the sacraments, especially the Eucharist” (NDC, 20.2). See also CCC, 629.
Sharing the Lesson with Families
Suggest that parents take a blessed palm home from church this Sunday and place it near a crucifix or holy picture on their family table. Encourage them to pray at mealtimes: “Jesus, we welcome you into our home. Thank you for your love and care. Thank you for_____. Amen.” Encourage parents to also take their child to the Holy Week liturgies. The washing of the feet on Holy Thursday, adoration of the cross on Good Friday, and the light and water rituals and baptisms on Holy Saturday will become lasting memories their child.
