This Tuesday, August 6, the Church celebrates the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord. Luke narrates this event in which Jesus went to a mountain to pray and brought along three of his disciples: Peter, James, and John.

When he was praying and after he had announced his Passion and Death to his disciples, Jesus’ face changed in appearance and his clothing became dazzling white. Moses and Elijah appeared right beside him, to talk about the suffering that was waiting for him in Jerusalem.

What an extraordinary experience for Peter, James, and John! Just a few days earlier, Jesus told them about his Passion and Death and now, they are witnessing a glimpse of the glory of his Resurrection. This must have filled them with hope. Jesus knew that his friends had to preview, even for a few moments, the promise of Resurrection, not only his, but each one of theirs. Without this, the disciples could not withstand the suffering that was to come.

Let’s pray that we too can remember that the battle is already won and that suffering and death have no authority over our lives. Let’s live with the hope that one day, we also will be sitting next to Jesus in his glory. Amen.
