The preacher to the papal household, Father Raniero Cantalamessa, OFM, says that the greatest paradox of humility is that “those who think they have it, don’t, and those who think they don’t have it, do.”
In some of his books and homilies, Father Cantalamessa has mentioned that humility is not what we may think it is. Humility is not about BEING small because one can be small and not be humble. Humility is not about FEELING small because this could derive from an inferiority complex or other mental health issue. The preacher to the Pope reminds us that humility is not about SAYING one is humble because a person can say tirelessly that he or she is humble, but not be convinced in his or her heart.
The humility that this Sunday´s Gospel refers to, says Father Cantalamessa, is about BECOMING small for love. Humility is the willingness to descend and serve. Jesus descended, humbled himself. He is God and he came down to take a servant’s condition.
Let us pray… Lord, we ask you to fill our hearts with the willingness to humbly serve others, especially the children who will be under our care during this new school year. Amen.
