FROM OUR EDITORS—Sunday, August 20 – 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time

From-our-editor-august-15Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a holy day of obligation. This is also a special feast of the Augustinians of the Assumption, the religious order that owns our publishing house and has a publishing or ministry presence in 32 countries around the world.

Today’s Gospel tells of Mary’s visit to her cousin Elizabeth. Upon hearing Mary’s greeting, Elizabeth’s unborn child (John the Baptist) leapt for joy in recognition of the presence of our Savior. Elizabeth greets Mary, saying, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.” Mary responds by proclaiming her great prayer of praise, the Magnificat.

The Assumption of Mary “is a singular participation in her Son’s Resurrection and an anticipation of the resurrection of other Christians” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 966). It holds the promise that we too may share in the resurrection. For this promise, we give thanks to our good and gracious God!
