Mark 6:1–6

He was amazed at their lack of faith. –Mark 6:6

Who wouldn’t cooperate with a miracle if it came their way? Many of us, in fact. Me, for one. Three decades ago, I had chronic pain in my wrist from an early shattering of the bone. Someone asked if I wanted to be healed, offering to pray over the injury. The question made me afraid, and I said no. For days I reflected on that reply. Why didn’t I say yes, I want to be healed? The truth is, I did want healing. But I didn’t want it to come “that way.” The problem was that faith healing didn’t figure into my rational universe. Such an event would change the way I imagined the world and religion are supposed to work. I didn’t want to disturb my predetermined beliefs. I preferred to live with the pain and the world as it was. Happily, for me, I got a second chance to answer that question: “Do you want to be healed?” This time I said yes, and I was. God is bigger than our imagination.

Do you believe in biblical miracles? Do you believe miraculous events are possible today?

While The Gospel at Home takes a break in the summer months, we’ll be drawing our weekly reflections from Exploring the Sunday Readings.
