John 16:12–15

“When he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth.” –John 16:13

In certain seasons of our lives, we feel quite blindsided by events and stumble around, trying to regain our footing. Someone we depended on deserts us. Finances go south abruptly. An injury or illness robs us of ability. Circumstances change too rapidly for us to adjust. The grand plan we’ve counted on all along turns out to be a pipedream. The institutions we believed in fail us.

When our inner compass is spinning madly, we reach out for a steadying force. That may be the hand of a friend, the counsel of a therapist, spiritual direction from a wise person, or direct guidance from God in prayer. The Spirit of truth isn’t only found in a prayer book or the Sunday Homily. It could be awaiting you in what the Japanese call “nature bathing”: refreshing your wounded soul in the beauty of natural surroundings. If truth is one, then truth is all around us.

How much are you willing to invest in the quest for truth?

When does the need for answers grow most urgent in you?

While The Gospel at Home takes a break in the summer months, we’ll be drawing our weekly reflections from Exploring the Sunday Readings.
