Some people know the day before Ash Wednesday as Shrovetide or Pancake Day. Many others celebrate Mardi Gras, which is French for “Fat Tuesday.” The idea behind these celebrations is similar—a final indulgence before the austerity, abstinence, and fasting that Catholics observe during Lent.
