The Most Holy Trinity

The Most Holy Trinity

Of all the mysteries in the Christian faith, the mystery of the Holy Trinity may be the most difficult to grasp. In religion, a mystery is a truth about which we can say something but which we cannot fully understand or explain. Mysteries cannot be known through our human understanding. They must be revealed to us by God.

The Most Holy Trinity celebrates the mystery that God is One God in Three Divine Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Father begets the Son and loves him, and the Son loves the Father in return. This love is so powerful that it breathes forth (spirates) another Divine Person: the Holy Spirit.

This mystery is foreshadowed all the way back in the Book of Genesis when God says, “Let us make human beings in our image, after our likeness” (1:26, emphases added). This gives us an insight into the revelation of God that happens fully when Jesus comes. Jesus tells us that he is the Son of God and that he and the Father are one. Together, after Jesus completes his mission on earth, the Father and Son send the Holy Spirit to help and guide the Church.
