Learn about two female saints who have ties to this week’s observances of World Day of the Poor (11/15) and Discover Catholic Schools Week (11/15–11/21): Saint Elizabeth of Hungary and Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne.
As we observe the World Day of the Poor this Sunday, it’s timely to learn about Saint Elizabeth of Hungary whose feast day is 11/17. She cared for the poor in the German nation where her husband was king. She died at the age of twenty-four but made a big difference for good in her short life. She is the patron saint of those who carry on her work in soup kitchens and shelters for the homeless. Learn more about her here.
Another female saint we remember this week is Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne. Her feast day is 11/18. She traveled from her home in France to the US in 1818. She helped establish the first free girls’ school west of the Mississippi River. She later traveled to Kansas to teach children of the Potowatami Tribe. She helped to spread her belief that education isn’t only for the privileged and that girls deserve an education equal to that of boys. She’s an appropriate saint to honor during Discover Catholic Schools Week. Learn more about her here.
